On November 6th, the San Diego Public Library hosted an event featuring Young Adult authors Jandy Nelson, Meg Wolitzer, and Ally Condie. Not only was it wonderful to hear them talk about their books and their writing journey, it warmed my heart to see the number of young readers present who were avid fans of their work.
As a little groupie myself, I stood in line to get my books signed and to bask in the glow of these wonderful writers. During my few moments of chatting with each, I asked each of them to indulge a strange request: would you please write a few words of advice for me as I approached my ‘final’ novel revision?
(I had brought with me a hand-bound version of my latest manuscript that I had printed and pasted in a paperback book format.)
Each author said such encouraging things in those few minutes and also wrote me a personal note that I could keep referring to as I went back to the well of revision. This interaction and their words were really inspiring as I needed a jolt to help me keep going. It reminded me of how lucky I am to be (aspiring to be) a part of such a supportive community where people really try to lift each other up and encourage them on the writing journey.
The KidLit community really is the best!
